Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Anurag Kashyap starrer Haddi released on ZEE5 yesterday. The film sees Nawaz portray the challenging character of a transgender woman with perfection. The movie indicates that as society has become increasingly accepting of stories centred around transgender individuals, there is also a growing recognition of the unique culture and communication methods of the Kinnar community.

Director of Haddi, Akshat Ajay Sharma, has shared an interesting insight into the world of crossdressers, where claps are used as a secret code and a means of communication. This distinctive communication system, known as Gupti or Ulti Vhasa, has largely remained hidden from the public eye until now. Within the crossdressing community, this linguistic treasure trove has evolved into a form of expression and connection.
Gupti is rich with regional nuances and serves as a testament to the depth and diversity of the community’s culture. It’s important to note that there are two categories of individuals within this community: those who communicate in Farsi and those who use Gupti.
Speaking about the same, Akshat Ajay Sharma said exclusively, “Exploring the Gupti language and the vibrant culture of this community has been a deeply personal journey for me. This film is heart and soul, and I’ve dedicated extensive research to bring this fascinating world to the forefront. Through painstaking research and heartfelt immersion into their lives, we have uncovered an interesting world of communication through claps and a language that has remained a well-guarded secret. It’s a testament to the power of storytelling to shed light on hidden treasures within our society.”
Veteran actress Ila Arun, who portrays Revati Maa in the film, expressed, “Getting to know the incredible individuals within this community while working on Haddi has been a heartwarming journey. As I delved into the vibrant culture and unique communication of this community, I realized the power of authenticity and unity. Just as Gupti serves as a hidden code for communication, their unwavering spirit is a code for resilience and acceptance. Haddi also stars Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, Saurabh Sachdeva, Shridhar Dubey, Rajesh Kumar, Vipin Sharma, and Saharsh Shukla in supporting roles. The film is produced by Zee Studios and Sanjay Saha and Radhika Nanda’s banner Anandita Studios.
